Agassiz Chiropractor | Dr. Darren Paul
“I knew at that moment that I would become a chiropractor”
It all began after an ice hockey injury at the age of 10. I was experiencing severe lower back pain and was unable to walk. My mother made an appointment for me with her chiropractor, Dr. Donald Westlake. I had no idea what to expect, but was willing to try anything to relieve the pain.
“It was incredible,” continues Dr. Paul. “It happened with the second adjustment – I’ll never forget that moment. It was as if a huge weight was suddenly lifted off me. When I stood up off the table, my pain was gone and I was able to walk comfortably again. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a chiropractor.”
Chiropractic Education
Dr. Paul began his pre-chiropractic education at FVCC (Fraser Valley Community College – now UFV) where he studied the basic sciences such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics along with basic physiology and anatomy courses.
After completing his study there, he was accepted at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. During his four years at Palmer, courses included biochemistry, a major emphasis on anatomy and human physiology, X-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care in the Palmer College Public Clinic.
After graduating in 1992, Dr. Paul began an associateship under his mentor, Dr. Scott Matz in Missoula, Montana. In 1995, Dr. Paul moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he practiced for another 4 years before finally moving back to Canada and purchasing his current practice in Agassiz, BC.
“We love skeptics,” smiles Dr. Paul. “I still remember the concerns and apprehension I had when I went to the chiropractor for the first time. So we make it a point to explain everything in advance, answer questions and attempt to over communicate. Patients appreciate that.”
On a personal note…
Dr. Paul is married to Tracey and they have four children, Shane, Kayla, Zach and Rebekah. Dr. Paul loves the outdoors and has climbed several big mountains including Mt. Rainier, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Cotopaxi, to raise funds for the Prostate Awareness Foundation (PAF).
Dr. Paul believes that health comes from within and that a healthy “lifestyle” improves one’s odds of maintaining their health. “People are beginning to realize that prevention is what it’s all about. Waiting until they’re sick and then treating the disease is counter-productive. Incorporating a nutritious diet, getting plenty of exercise (both weight training and cardio), receiving regular chiropractic adjustments and massages and trying to avoid outside toxins such as antibiotics and over-the-counter medications (drugs) can only improve one’s health over time.”
